About Totally Psyched

Totally Psyched is a specialist outpatient mental health practice supporting children, adolescents, young adults and their families. Based in Takapuna on Auckland’s North Shore, the clinic brings together psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, educational specialists and play-based practitioners in a welcoming, youth-friendly environment. Care is evidence-based, personalised and designed around each young person’s developmental needs, strengths and goals. The team works with concerns such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, stress and trauma, using approaches that include CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR, narrative therapy, mindfulness and play therapy. Family involvement is an important part of the Totally Psyched approach. Depending on the young person’s needs, care may include individual counselling, family therapy, group work, parent support or coordination between psychological and psychiatric clinicians. Neurodevelopmental, cognitive and educational assessments are also available for young people requiring greater clarity about learning, attention or developmental differences. This is a private outpatient service rather than a residential rehabilitation centre, allowing clients to attend appointments while continuing to live at home and participate in school, work and family life. The current clinic is located close to central Takapuna’s shops, public transport and community amenities.

Vivian Ho is a caring, patient, and highly professional therapist. Through her thoughtful guidance, our child has been able to express inner feelings and release emotional stress in a safe and engaging way — whether through conversations, games, or creative activities like drawing. Over time, we’ve seen remarkable growth in our child’s emotional strength, especially in areas of self-acceptance, self-esteem, and personal identity. Vivian’s empathy and professionalism have truly made a difference. We wholeheartedly recommend Vivian to any child or adolescent in need of psychological support. May more children in this world feel the love and strength that she so kindly brings to her work.

First experience with Totally Psyched and really happy with the choice to see them. Referred by my GP and will be recommending for anyone needing such services. Really caring, warm and professional.

My son has been attending this clinic for over three years, and while we've had some truly positive experiences—particularly with his therapist Matt, who was an incredible support for both my son and our family—I feel extremely let down by the way things have ended. Despite our long-standing relationship with the clinic, we were recently dropped from their service without any proper consultation or discussion. To make matters worse, the reasons provided for cancelled appointments were not truthful, and attempts to resolve the situation have been frustratingly one-sided. Communication has been limited to back-and-forth emails, with no willingness to pick up the phone and have a direct conversation. This lack of transparency and personal engagement makes you feel like you're being avoided, rather than supported. It's incredibly disappointing to have had such a promising relationship end in this way, especially when care and consistency are so important in therapy. I don’t usually leave negative reviews, but I felt compelled to share our experience in the hope that it encourages better communication and accountability in the future.

We used the services of Totally Psyched in 2023. Unfortunately, this clinic does not deliver the high quality services it advertises and the operational/business management at this clinic is of a very poor quality. I am reluctant to leave bad reviews, however in this case it was so bad and unethical I feel others should be forewarned to go elsewhere. The clinician we saw for an ed psych report was good, but sadly the overall experience we had with this clinic was highly unprofessional and of a very poor quality. For anyone wanting expert care for their children I would strongly advise not to come here. There are other private providers who charge significantly less and provide the care and support families and children need. Navigating the public system would be considerably easier and less stressful than going to this clinic. Below was reflective of our experience with ''Totally Psyched' - as provided in our email feedback to them in November 2023. "...I really feel like Totally Psyched is capitalising on people's need for care by charging high rates for consultations/testing. The fees for an ADHD diagnosis don't seem to reflect a different service or speciality training to justify the high charge. I think this is poor taste for vulnerable families who may be feeling desperate for answers. Often parents do not know 'definitively' if their children have ADHD and or other diagnoses,, yet Totally Psyched is expecting parents to be aware of what they need to screen their children for, with no all encompassing ADHD ASD screening. I was told if I thought ASD may also need to be screened for that would be an additional screening fee on top of the ADHD fee. There are no paediatricians or psychiatrists in Auckland who charge over $2000 plus an hour for a diagnosis of ASD or ADHD. I was prepared to pay that as I was desperate to access a diagnosis. Then after waiting some time for an ADHD assessment I was informed of a possible assessment date and told this would be carried out by an intern (not the experienced senior clinicians that was marketed). I said no thank you. I wanted an experienced clinician and could they please advise me of when the next availability was. It was strongly inferred this should not be looked down on as an option and there would be no difference in quality of care. These comments were condescending, passive aggressive and Totally Psyched overlooked they were marketing a 'superior' diagnostic service for ADHD with an intern at a fee not seen elsewhere in the Auckland region of private psychologists. I discussed this with friends and we were all shocked and agreed there is no way we would take our kids to an intern for a diagnosis. I followed up with the receptionist at Totally Psyched about when I could book my child in for their ADHD assessment (without an intern interviewing), and I was informed current availability was only with interns and they would come back to me about experienced clinicians availability as soon as possible. That was on July 28th. I did not hear back from the reception again. I have since found another provider. ..."
